Day 11 66miles La Rochelle to Bressuire

The B&B we stayed in last night was more like a boutique hotel. It was a large old townhouse close to the port which has been very tastefully renovated. We both ranked the bed the most comfortable we've slept in yet. The bread and croissants I had for breakfast were probably also the best. As you can see, Max tucked into his gluten free breakfast with great gusto.

We set off around 9.30 (Max gave the bike a quick service first after yesterday's downpour) and were very relieved to see the sun was out. Today was a ride of two halves with the first 30 miles or so being very flat after which the hills would start to kick in.
Again we passed alongside a national park and for the most part cycled along quiet roads/lanes often running alongside rivers and canals and even a lake. A rain cloud caught up with us at one point which spurred us on to cycle abit faster to escape it. At one point some friendly French cyclists invited us to draught them which we did for a short while.
We hit another deviation (some road resurfacing along a quiet country lane) but decided to ignore it. For the most part we managed to navigate it but there was a small stretch towards the end where Max had to push the bike through a field on the other side because the new tarmac was still wet!
Sadly no plat du jour for us today. We've survived on dates and fruit (oh and the extra croissant I snuck out of breakfast with). We finished the ride around 3.30pm and as we couldn't check into our accomodation until 5.30 popped to the supermarket to get some emergency supplies.
Our B&B tonight is an ancient renovated stone farmhouse. It's in a lovely setting but quite remote. The restaurant we went to for dinner was our only option so the choice was eat here or don't eat at all! Again whilst not one of our top ranking meals it was tasty enough and we ate the lot!!
Now we just have to navigate the walk home down the dirt track in our flip flops 😂

  2. Thanks for joining in. All the support we've had from everyone really has made such a huge difference. That was a lovely picture of Annabelle's graduation we saw the other day. Where have all those years gone??! 😀
