Day 2 50miles Aigues-Mortes to Cap d'Agde

After a good night's sleep and a delicious breakfast (home made local bread and orange flavoured brioche being the highlights for me 😋) we set off at about 10am this morning. Max kept reminding me that today is my rest day - only 50 miles and no hills!!
It was another very hot day (though the 70mph winds did not reach us) and the cycle paths are very slow going (some 10kph speed limits) so it took us much longer than it should have to arrive at our destination.
A couple of times we deviated onto the main road but that provoked a fair bit of horn blowing from impatient French drivers who clearly wanted us back on the cycle path.
We came up trumps again for lunch in the lovely historic town of Sete where we found a charming cafe serving healthy food with a Norwegian twist. Max spotted the nod to Tin Tin, we've no idea where that fits in though!
We finally arrived at Cap D'Agde around 4.30 with plenty of time to squeeze in a swim (managing to avoid the naturist beach 😅). Lovely accomodation again tonight - two luxuries being a washing machine and Netflix!, Our washing is now done and we're hoping to stay awake long enough for an episode of Ozark. No mean feat given that Max was sparko by 9pm last night 😂).
The Tandem is sitting outside a block of flats tonight secured to a post with a glorified zip tie. I hope it is still there in the morning.

    Thx Rups 😀. We've had mixed responses tbh - some look very gloomy (maybe it's a culture difference?) but others are quite charming. I worked hard and got plenty of waves along the canal du midi yesterday though 😉

Another fab breakfast today - the best croissants and coffee I've had so far this trip - and a charming host. We set off around 9am and managed to navigate rush hour in Carcassonne without too much hassle. We passed through a couple of nice small towns but soon we were in the countryside. We knew that the climbing started just after Castlenaudry but were pleasantly surprised to reach the town around 11am - which meant we were making good progress. The climb was tough although thankfully relatively short but the real challenge came when the route suddenly took us down a dirt track that forced us to dismount pretty sharpish (even Max wasn't brave enough to take it on!). We were relieved to get back to the main road after 30mins which was a country lane across rolling hills.  However our success was shortlived as we soon hit another diversion which in France we've come to realise simply means "you can't come down here so find your own way out.....

Day 11 66miles La Rochelle to Bressuire

The B&B we stayed in last night was more like a boutique hotel. It was a large old townhouse close to the port which has been very tastefully renovated. We both ranked the bed the most comfortable we've slept in yet. The bread and croissants I had for breakfast were probably also the best. As you can see, Max tucked into his gluten free breakfast with great gusto.  We set off around 9.30 (Max gave the bike a quick service first after yesterday's downpour) and were very relieved to see the sun was out. Today was a ride of two halves with the first 30 miles or so being very flat after which the hills would start to kick in. Again we passed alongside a national park and for the most part cycled along quiet roads/lanes often running alongside rivers and canals and even a lake. Day 14 72 miles Froulay to Ouistreham (92 miles in reality!!)

Another lovely breakfast - homemade rhubarb jam and yoghurt, oh and freshly baked scones being the particular highlights. Over breakfast our host filled us in on the misadventures of their other guests (a french couple also cycling but on electric bikes) the day before. Apparently they had misjudged the ride and got caught out because their battery ran out with many hills left to climb. We got the sense this wasn't the first time he'd seen this happen and observed that people often bite off more than they can chew. That would never happen to us or so we smugly thought 😂 We knew that today would involve a lot of climbing and, after checking with our host, decided to follow the easy green cycle route to Caen instead of the more hilly route we had planned. Time was not an issue for us today and our plan was to eat in Caen early evening before heading to Ouistreham for the 11pm ferry.
