Day 3 68miles Cap d'Agde to Carcassonne
Well thankfully (I think!!) the bike was still there this morning so we set off about 10am. Another sunny morning but it was definitely a fair bit cooler which we were very grateful for. We made really good progress to start with as the route followed main (but not too busy) roads which are much faster to cycle on. This took us through some really nice traditional French towns until we ended up on the Canal du Midi which we then followed for a few miles. Even this was fairly fast and very scenic too. I managed to get quite a few waves from those people boating down the canal and we were cheered on by some workmen by the roadside at one point. We'd planned our lunch stop at the 2/3 point on the ride - at a town called Olonzac. Again we struck gold with a fab little cafe doing an amazing value menu du jour for 15euros including wine (which I resisted) and coffee.
The scenery for the last third of the ride was very beautiful. Rolling hills, beautiful vineyards and poppy fields galore. Again we passed through some very traditional French villages - it was almost as if time had stood still for 100 years or more!
The downside to the afternoon's cycling was that the sun came out and the temperature climbed steadily. This makes the climbs in particular quite exhausting and we're constantly battling dehydration too.
We arrived at our destination in Carcassonne at about 5pm. We're staying in another lovely b&b very close to the old town.
The pressure is now mounting and we have several challenging days ahead. We'll need all the strength and determination we can musterπ
π
Hands up if you are (still) having fun.
ReplyDeleteWell done. Still looks good.
Well it was a good day today, we're not sure if tomorrow will be though π€£.
DeleteHi Max & Sarah - great reading about your trip again & seeing the photos - the pit stops sound more fun than the cycling bits. Lots of love from the MackPearces xx
ReplyDeleteThx π. It's becoming more of a food blog isn't it (which shows where my priorities lie π€£). Will have to hand over to Max for more biking talk π
